Malaria · Vector control

Evaluating a new indoor residual spray

How well can an indoor spray control mosquitoes that resist insecticides?

Principal Investigator: Mbanga Muleba

Study details

Small community trials in Zambia evaluate a new Syngenta indoor residual spray against resistant, field-collected Anopheles funestus and Anopheles gambiae, alongside susceptible insectary-reared Anopheles gambiae of the KISUMU strain. The project contributes evidence on vector control tools in settings affected by insecticide resistance.

Nutrition · Laboratory methods

Improving the measurement of vitamin A status

How can we measure the body’s vitamin A stores more accurately?

Principal Investigator: Justin Chileshe

Study details

The project develops a “Wonder Woman” kinetic model and evaluates liver reserve cut-offs for vitamin A status. It is part of NHRTI’s work to refine the measurement of vitamin A stores and improve the evidence used to assess micronutrient deficiency.

Malaria · Maternal health

Malaria screening and prevention in pregnancy

How can the first antenatal visit support malaria prevention and treatment?

Principal Investigator: Dr. Jean-Bertin Bukasa Kabuya · Co-Investigator: Dr. Christine Manyando

Study details

This study examines the safety and efficacy of intermittent presumptive treatment in pregnancy with sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine using rapid diagnostic test screening and treatment at the first antenatal care visit. The research asks how approaches at the first visit can support malaria prevention and treatment during pregnancy.

Malaria · Clinical and translational science

Understanding severe malaria

What happens inside the body when malaria becomes severe?

Principal Investigator: Dr. J. B. Kabuya · Co-Investigator: Dr. Michael Nambozi

Study details

Clinical and translational investigations examine the biological processes behind severe malaria. This work connects clinical observations with laboratory investigation to better understand why the disease takes different forms and how serious outcomes develop.

Malaria · Access to treatment

Severe malaria treatment in remote settings

What treatment approaches can be studied where onward referral is difficult?

Investigators: Dr. C. Manyando, Dr. M. Nambozi and Dr. S. Hachizovu

Study details

The project studies severe malaria treatment with rectal artesunate and artemisinin-based combination therapy in remote settings. It examines a difficult service-delivery question: how treatment approaches can be studied where onward referral is constrained. The project description is research information, not instructions for self-treatment.

HPV vaccination research team outside Ndola District Health Office collaborating on cervical cancer prevention

Implementation science · Adolescent health

Connecting HIV services and cervical cancer prevention

Can established HIV services help adolescent girls access HPV vaccination?

Study team: Sam Miti, Jean M. Hunleth, Gershom Chongwe, Aliness Dombola and Michelle Silver

Study details

This study investigates how HIV service infrastructure can support HPV vaccination for adolescent girls in Zambia. By studying integration within adolescent HIV clinics, it explores how established services can provide another important prevention intervention to people already using them.

Malaria · Multisite clinical research

SMAART-MAP: a platform for severe malaria research

Which approaches may improve outcomes for children with severe malaria?

Principal Investigator: Dr. Mike Chaponda

Study details

The Severe Malaria A Research and Trials consortium — Multisite Adaptive Platform trial studies approaches to improving outcomes for children with severe malaria. Work at St Paul’s Hospital in Nchelenge District is undertaken in collaboration with Imperial College London, with a focus on severe anaemia and kidney dysfunction.
