Historical Background

NHRTI evolved from the Tropical Diseases Research Centre (TDRC), a public health research institution that has operated in Zambia since 1975 with an initial focus on tropical disease burden and implementation-ready interventions.

  • Created to build locally grounded research, training, and diagnostic support capabilities.
  • Its mandate was expanded and retained under legislation as the National Health Research and Training Institute.
  • Current focus includes research governance, policy translation, capacity building, and health systems support.

Key institutional transition milestones are preserved in the Legal Mandate and Act 13 documentation pages.
