From the Tropical Diseases Research Centre to a national institute with a broader research and training mandate.
1975
Tropical disease research foundation
The institution began as TDRC with a strong public health research role and a focus on diseases of national and regional importance.
1982
Statutory research centre
TDRC operated under a statutory mandate to conduct disease research, evaluate interventions, publish scientific outputs and serve as a training centre.
2024
Expanded national mandate
Act 13 of 2024 continued and renamed TDRC as NHRTI, widening the institute’s role across health research, training, data and laboratory systems.
2025+
Implementation and transition
The institute now aligns its research programmes, training services and resource platforms to the expanded NHRTI mandate.
