Scientific departments

Biomedical Sciences

Understanding disease through laboratory science, diagnostics and the study of vectors.

Scientists working at laboratory microscopes

The Biomedical Sciences Department investigates tropical diseases, non-communicable diseases and other infections. Its work connects laboratory research, diagnostic methods and public health surveillance.

A closer look

Understanding disease starts with careful observation.

Some questions begin with a sample under a microscope. Others follow a mosquito in the field or examine a pathogen’s genetic information.

Biomedical teams use these different perspectives to investigate disease and support clinical and public health research.

Investigate disease

Study microorganisms, parasites, immune responses and the biological processes behind illness.

Develop understanding

Examine diagnostic methods, resistance, biomarkers and measures used in clinical research.

Connect field and laboratory

Bring vector studies, population questions and laboratory investigation together.

Nine specialised units

Each unit contributes a different set of methods and experience. Open a unit to explore its scientific focus.

Molecular biology

Molecular methods, sequencing and bioinformatics support the investigation of disease mechanisms and identification of pathogens.

Microbiology

Research on microorganisms, antimicrobial resistance and pathogen identification, alongside bacteriology external quality assessment.

Immunology

Investigation of immune responses to tropical, emerging and re-emerging diseases and vaccine responses.

Chemistry

Study of biochemical processes, biomarkers and laboratory measures that support clinical research and safety assessment.

Vector research

Field and laboratory studies of vectors, including their behaviour, ecology, insecticide resistance and population genetics.

Parasitology

Microscopy and molecular investigation of parasites, host interactions, malaria genetic variation and neglected tropical diseases (including schistosomiasis and filariasis).

Tuberculosis

Research on drug-sensitive and drug-resistant TB, molecular diagnostics and the human–animal interface.

Nutrition

Studies of micronutrient status, fortified foods and interventions to address nutritional deficiencies.

Haematology

Investigation of blood disorders, haemoglobinopathies, newborn screening and blood measurements that support diagnosis and clinical research.

Science with a practical connection

Research and diagnostic support, side by side.

Scientific units contribute to disease-focused projects and laboratory testing. Work ranges from mosquito behaviour to molecular investigation of pathogens and the measurement of nutritional status.
